This is a plastic scintillator with ZnS:Ag applied to one side. The Zinc Sulphide layer is enough to just stop the alpha particles. The beta particles reach the thin plastic scintillator approx 0.25mm thick. The plastic scintillator usually requires just enough thickness to let the weak gamma signals pass.
For both alpha particle and beta particle detection. A thin layer of Zns:Ag on plastic scintillator absorbs the aplha particles. Whereas the plastic scintillator is just think enough to let the gamma signals pass by and cause least disturbance.
A zinc sulphide based scintillator is coated directly on to perspex light guides for use in hand-held probes, fixed in personnel or equipment scanners that are sited at points of entry to, or exit from, high risk areas.
A version is also available on thin mylar sheet where intimate contact between the sample and detector is required such as in radio nucleotide studies.
